True “asleep” general anesthesia is reserved for specific surgical situations and is far less common in a general dental office.

The Common Levels of Sedation

• Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) — a mild, fast-acting option you breathe in; it wears off within minutes, so you can usually drive yourself home.
• Oral sedation — a prescribed pill taken before your visit that produces a deeper sense of calm; you’ll need a ride home.
• IV sedation — delivered through a vein for the deepest conscious relaxation, used for more involved procedures.
